Renzo Piano’s low-cost social housing project at Rue de Meaux in north-east Paris, 1991, was a noted response to achieving density and enhancing quality of environment. It is a series of five and six storey blocks that reflect the 19th arrondissement grain and density of 250 dwellings per hectare but ingenious use of the site frees up space for a new garden square between the blocks.
