London’s Growing…Up!

Exhibitions
3 Jun–12 Jun 2014

The London’s Growing…Up! exhibition is based on a GL Hearn building survey. The study looks into the past, present and future of tall buildings in the capital. It highlights the fact at least 236 tall buildings over 20 storeys are currently proposed, approved or under construction in London. Out of this 236, 48% of these tall towers have already been approved with 33 buildings having 40-49 storeys and 22 buildings having 50 or more storeys. As a result London’s skyline is set to make an impactful transformation.

Residential towers are at the forefront of this tall building’s prospect with 189 (80%) blocks being planned. The capital will also gain 18 office towers, 13 mixed-use, 8 hotels and 1 educational institute.

The London Borough of Tower Hamlets is set for the highest number of proposed tall buildings, having 23% of planned projects in the area. East London in total will have 107 new tall buildings and Central London will have 76.

This NLA exhibition uses imagery and models to showcase the findings from the study. It provides a visual insight on the changing skyline and where the growth is occurring in London. The exhibition dwells on the history of tall buildings but also ponders that of the future.
