Unpacking Bags with Studio MUTT, curator Dr Lucia Savi, and Evonne Mackenzie

Part of Shaping Space

Hear Studio MUTT Architects in conversation with curator Dr Lucia Savi and V&A’s Head of Design Evonne Mackenzie on design and collaboration for the Bags: Inside Out exhibition at the V&A.

The model is a powerful tool. Unpacking Bags will reveal the design and curation processes behind a major exhibition to show how the 1:50 working model served the curators as a way of understanding the gallery space in three-dimensions, helping develop a suitable backdrop for the precious collection of bags on display.

The online talk will investigate the role of design in ensuring the sustainability of a temporary exhibition, with a focus on re-use and re-purposing. The speakers will explain how the 10m long exhibition Makers’ Table was saved from landfill, and how the plinths, label holders, and other accessories are salvaged from other shows. New-build components were designed to be dismantled and shipped along with the touring exhibition kit.

This all adds up to offset the environmental impact of a temporary exhibition, following the designer’s mantra of low cost, low carbon, high impact.

Please register to attend. You will receive a link to join the online talk on the morning of the event.

This event is part of the Shaping Space: Architectural Models in Context project, funded by the AHRC, led by the V&A and the Building Centre.
