The Drawing Gym for Architects and Spatial Designers

Workshop
Mon 5 Oct 2015

The Drawing Gym is a freehand drawing course that motivates people to draw and communicate effectively. Adopted by a host of large architectural practices and University College London, the course provides a set of visual tools for expressing ideas in the design process. Emphasis lies in communication rather than virtuoso drawing performances; we boost skills and confidence initially with a set of short refresher exercises in line weight, isometric, axonometric, oblique, two-point perspective and section drawing. Attendees are encouraged to make "conversational sketches" that apply these drawing techniques to design or visualisation challenges in short time frames.

We will then work through sketchbook exercises specifically to show how to set up two-point perspectives from street level, 3D "reveal" drawings in isometric, and thumbnail sketches; all in freehand - with occasional use of rulers, and a set square. We will spend one evening making pictorial and diagrammatic sketches around a building.

The course is taught using a combination of demonstrations, short films, one to one tuition, exercise sheets and reference to contemporary freehand sketches. Designed to suit those with some (possibly rusty) freehand drawing experience - but not absolute beginners - attendees are encouraged to progress at a comfortable pace in a stimulating and supportive atmosphere and will be expected to devote roughly one hour per week to homework assignments. The course is designed by Trevor Flynn, Director of Drawing At Work. He and one other instructor from his team will be teaching the classes.
