Brick Works!

Exhibitions
16 Jun–10 Jul 2015

Brick Works! brings together design, sculpture and photography to explore the use of brick in contemporary art and design.

Renowned British sculptor, artist and designer Alex Chinneck is known for his high profile work with brick, creating temporary public displays - including his sliding house ‘From the knees of my nose to the belly of my toes’ project in Kent. In Brick Works! Chinneck shares his creative approach to using brick in modern art and demonstrates how brick can be used in different contexts.

The exhibition also celebrates the work of Chilean artist Fernando Casasempere. Casasempere works with clay that is a by-product from industrial processes. He spent six months at Baggeridge Brick’s Sedgley factory for his work ‘Under the Forest’. His work is represented in several public collections including The Victoria and Albert Museum, London and was showcased in the forecourt of Somerset House, London in 2012.

Other artists and designers include Iain Howlett, Demelza Watts and Abake. Curated by Florence Maschietto.

The exhibition is also accompanied by a full-day conference exploring the aesthetic possibilities of brick. The conference offers practical guidance to help achieve design ambitions and brings together world-class speakers to examine the use of brick as a façade material in contemporary architecture.

Design Day – Brick Works! Tuesday 16 June, 10.30am – 5.30pm at The Building Centre.

Brick Works! is a collaborative project between The Building Centre and the Brick Development Association during the London Festival of Architecture.
