Selling the night: how to create a successful city nightscape

Conference
Thu 13 Jul 2017

Selling The Night is an essential half-day, business-focused conference for those working on mixed-use schemes, urban residential projects, city masterplans, acoustically delicate sites, Business Improvement Districts and cultural initiatives.

The government has recognised that London and other major UK cities risk losing out to European counterparts that have a successful nightlife. Policy makers, planners, landowners and developers are increasingly seeking proposals for inviting 24-hour spaces that offer maximum payback in terms of regeneration and return on investment. Major opportunities are open to those who can navigate the complexities, offer strategic advice and deliver innovative solutions.

Delegates on this half-day conference will learn about what makes 24-hour cities attractive places to live and work. They will discover key night-time development areas and find out how to capitalise on change.

Speakers include:

- Philip Kolvin QC, Chair of London's Night Time Commission

- Deirdra Armsby, director of regeneration and planning at the London Borough of Newham – planning for night-time footfall in Newham’s regeneration zones

- Max Farrell, partner at Farrells - Masterplans and their role in the long-term investment of night-time spaces

- Danny Collins, associate director at Savills and co-author of the Late Night Management Areas Research for the city of Sydney - how policy in Sydney changed over time: interventions, issues and future plans

- John McRae, director at Orms – The development of St Giles Circus in London’s West End

- Philippine Nguyen, founder of Art Night - How night-time art festivals can boost economic impact for local businesses and instigate city-wide improvements

- Rollo Maschietto, working across Sound Diplomacy's consulting for the Mayor of London - Developing mayoral led music initiatives with London's Night Czar and the London Music Board

- Carl Turner, founding director of Carl Turner Architects – The development of Pop Brixton and the economic argument for temporary night-time spaces

- Florence Lam, fellow and director at Arup - How does lighting affect people’s behaviour and perception of urban spaces at night?
