In the most audacious intervention on the garden cities debate in a generation, Lord Simon Wolfson of Aspley Guise has thrown down the gauntlet by offering £250,000 to the person who comes up with the brightest ideas on how to build a new garden city.
With access to the team behind the Prize, and featuring leading thinkers on land use, housing and place-making, this conference aims to explore the issues raised by the prize in more detail.
• What might a winning vision of a new garden city be?
• How can garden cities be economically viable and self-financing, and what governance models are likely to be needed for their development?
• How can local residents be persuaded to accept new development in their areas, and how can they be involved?
Announcing the conference, Simon Wolfson said: “The UK is suffering from chronic and socially divisive house price inflation, which is caused by shortages in the supply of new housing. And shortages in supply are often caused by resistance to poor quality development. We can and must do better, and garden cities are surely part of the answer.”
The conference will be of interest to potential entrants to the Prize, and anyone who cares about creating great new places: built environment professionals, local authority councillors and officers, developers and consultants, politicians, agents, property and land managers, and representative organisations.
