Energy Conversations: City Transport Strategies

Talk
Wed 21 Jan 2015

Transport accounts for around 20 per-cent of London's energy consumption with nearly half of that coming from cars and motorbikes. This event will explore the choices that need to be made to achieve the carbon targets of 2050: what are the most likely technologies and how do we persuade people to change their transport habits? How do we quantify the impacts of transport, energy and health? What are the political challenges when retrofitting an ageing city infrastructure to making policy that is fair and accessible to all?

Speakers:

Chair: Phil Bates Director, Buro Happold.

Sujith Kollamthodi, Practice Director of Sustainable Transport at Ricardo-AEA, will discuss the technical options for future city transport.

Sebastian Seelig, Senior Consultant at Buro Happold, will talk about the BeMobility project which looked at how to persuade Berliners to convert to greener forms of transport.

Professor Sir Andy Haines of London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine will explore the links between energy, transport and health.

Christian Wolmar, writer and broadcaster on transport, and prospective Labour candidate for Mayor of London.

Energy Conversations is a series of informative thought-leadership discussions around the supply and use of energy. Aimed at planners, developers, designers and building occupiers, the series explore key political, planning and technical issues which influence sustainable buildings. In this their third year, we are looking at City Energy strategies including Demand Management, Heat, Transport, Energy and Waste and Keeping Cool. They are produced by Buro Happold with ngenuity Ltd and supported by Rehau.
