West Ham Bus Garage Wins NFRC Award for Blackdown

Green Roof specialists Blackdown are proud to announce their success at the 2011 NFRC ‘Excellence in Roofing’ Awards. Their triumphant collaboration with Roofing Contractors Lakesmere, jointly earned both companies the Best Sustainable Green Roof award, for their exemplary installation of a Kalzip Nature Roof system at West Ham Bus Garage.

The NFRC Awards recognise and reward outstanding roofing projects in all the major roofing disciplines, which this year saw Blackdown claim 3 out of 4 of the finalist projects in the Green Roof Category.

The new £48m West Ham Bus Garage was designed for Transport for London by Pringle Richard Sharratt (PRS) Architects of London and constructed by Mansell Construction Services in order to meet the increased demand for public transport during the London 2012 Olympic Games. PRS specified a Kalzip roof system with 4000m² of Extensive Nature Roof planting, as part of an environmental package utilising eco-solutions such as biomass boilers and a 100kW wind turbine. Working in close partnership, Kalzip, Blackdown and Lakesmere provided a tailored solution for the West Ham project, which aims to produce more than 20% of its energy needs from renewable on-site resources.

The Nature Roof system was installed over two of the striking four-span Kalzip 65/400 barrel vaulted aluminium standing seam roofs, on the Western and Eastern Vaults, forming an important part of the Sustainable Drainage System (SUDS) and helping to improve the bio-diversity of the former brownfield site. Crowning the Nature Roof system is Blackdown’s high quality pre-cultivated, tightly-rooted Sedum carpet, comprising a variety of Sedum species, purpose-selected growing medium and a biodegradable carrier. It is quick to install and provides an instant coverage of 95%. This is particularly suited to highly-visible roofs that are sloped or have high wind load requirements, and can be installed in both new-build and refurbishment applications, above most roof coverings.

The completed facility is the most environmentally sustainable bus garage in the UK, achieving an 'A' rated Energy Performance Certificate. Its eco-friendly design and structure are predicted to cut CO2 emissions by 27% compared to a building using traditional materials.

Managing Director at Blackdown, Mark Harris, comments: “West Ham Bus Garage is an outstanding example of how green roofs are being incorporated into sustainable design and how they work effectively alongside other eco-technologies to help buildings achieve impressive environmental credentials. Blackdown enjoys a very successful relationship with Kalzip and Lakesmere and we are all very proud to have this project recognised by the NFRC.”
