Waitrose, Kings Hill

Case study
Kingspan’s KS1000 LS LongspanTM   insulated panel system has played a part in creating a contemporary look and meeting the challenge of a special curved feature for a striking new Waitrose store at Kings Hill, near Maidstone.
Built on the site of a former airfield, the store has been situated next to the original control tower, which is now listed.  Architects MBH Partnership, together with BDB Design, cleverly reflected the architecture of this iconic structure by incorporating a mock tower to the front elevation of the store.
The clean lines required for the modern design were achieved using Micro-Ribbed Kingspan KS1000 LS LongspanTM in an attractive Pearl shade from Kingspan’s Spectrum® colour coating range. The secret fix insulated panel system can span up to 8.2 metres from support to support, removing the need for secondary steelwork and reducing installation times. The curved aspect of the tower feature also presented no problems for this versatile product.

Gale Construction specified and installed 860m2 of the Kingspan LongspanTM insulated wall panels in a 120 mm thickness to deliver a U-value of 0.18 W/m2K.  The panel is able to achieve airtightness as low as 5 m3/hr/m2 at 50 pa, and this performance helped the Waitrose store to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating.  Senior estimator, David Poyntz commented:
“We provided a budget quotation and specification for the main contractor, R G Group, to achieve the specified U-values and air leakage values for the building envelope.  We were aware that the construction programme was going to be short, so from the outset we chose Kingspan KS1000 RW for the roof and internal parapet; together with Kingspan LongspanTM for speed of installation.  This proved effective; and the whole of our works were completed in less than 6 weeks.
“The cladding for the mock tower feature, to mimic the iconic control tower, was originally going to be another product, but we were able to obtain factory curved architectural wall panels from Kingspan.  We decided to use these curved panels so that the cladding on the mock tower matched the main building cladding, which proved to be very successful.”
The new 10,000 sq ft store is part of a development by Liberty Property Trust UK Ltd to transform the brownfield site into a bustling community, which will be home to over 250 businesses and 6,900 residents
