The Windmill (Build a New Life in the Country)

Channel 5’s popular documentary series Build a New Life in the Country follows ordinary people building a new lifestyle and home in a dream location. And what better a location than a rolling countryside landscape within close proximity to the city amenities of Preston and Liverpool.

This was the exact location for the project of a couple that contacted Hardwood Flooring manufacturers and CFA members Atkinson & Kirby, and with Channel 5’s answer to Grand Designs taking place on their doorstep, less than 10 miles away from their Head Office, the Company were keen to see exactly what the design would entail.

The flooring represented one of the finishing touches to the two year long project. It had to have a modern matt finish, and be suitable for use over underfloor heating, which instantly eliminated the use of solid hardwood flooring. After visiting the site Sales & Marketing Director David Ellams recommended the use of Contract Click Range Brushed and UV Oiled Oak Plank.

Having examined the choice available to them from a number of suppliers, the client selected Contract Click Range Brushed & UV Oiled Oak Plank as recommended. Atkinson & Kirby recommended flooring contractor and fellow CFA member Traditional Flooring for the installation. Having supplied the Company on many prestigious projects previously (including Vivienne Westwood Stores and Liverpool Town Hall), the Company were confident that these skilled craftsmen would do a good job.

Over 135m² of the engineered plank flooring which has a 4mm hardwood wear layer was installed altogether, in both the windmill and the living and bedroom areas of the house. The Brushed and UV Oiled finish offers the natural beauty of white oak with a light texture to the board. The UV Oil finish ensures that the flooring is easily maintained, with scratches and wear areas easily buffed out using a coat of maintenance oil. The flooring was installed over Quicktherm underlay, which is designed especially for use in conjunction with underfloor heating as it allows maximum heat transfer whilst providing impact sound reduction. And finally, each area was also finished with co-ordinating Atkinson & Kirby solid white oak twin and end caps.
