The Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh

Case study
The many valuable exhibits in The Scottish National Portrait Gallery are now protected from the weather and the extremes of temperature by a bespoke roofing and insulation solution provided by Gradient Flat Roofing. Gradient’s Powerdeck F insulation board has been used to create a new single-layer tapered roof for the famous Edinburgh building which houses Scotland’s national collection of portraits, plus the country’s National Photography Collection.

As the UK experts in single-layer tapered insulation, Gradient was able to contribute its technical expertise and comprehensive design skills to the project. The result was a new roof for the 18th century neo-gothic style building, which features vastly improved drainage below IKO’s Permaphalt Polymer Modified Mastic Asphalt waterproofing which will shield the roof from future damage for many years to come.

“This is a great example of the way in which we can used our proven roofing technology to create a new, insulated and highly effective roof for a wonderful old building,” explains Gradient’s Steve Adams. “The bespoke nature of our tapered insulation means that we can easily accommodate the very individual characteristics typically found on an old roof such as this and still create a reliable insulation solution that has all the falls required to ensure effective and reliable drainage.

“Building up a traditional multi-layer system on site can be difficult on an older building like this. However our single-layer system allowed us to create bespoke insulation components under controlled factory conditions and then deliver them to site ready for installation. Each insulation component was designed to fit a specific location on the roof and this ensured effective coverage of the roof area and also helped speed up the installation process.”

“We have used Gradient’s tapered insulation solutions on many previous projects and so we knew they were the ideal choice for this one,” adds IKO’s Mastic Asphalt  Area Business Manager, Steve Scott.  “The versatility and flexibility that they offer were exactly what was required on this unusual roof and Gradient’s technical input and expertise also proved to be extremely valuable.”

Gradient Powerdeck F Tapered insulation board is a closed cell rigid foam core faced on both sides with a perforated, mineral-coated glass fibre tissue. It offers excellent thermal insulation performance and is just one of the many different insulation materials which can be incorporated into a Gradient single-layer tapered roofing insulation system,
