Our Façade Products Make A Splash In Scotland

Case study

An ambitious, £4.8 million refurbishment of Get active @ Northfield included many of our facade roof and wall products, contributing towards improved thermal performance and enabling a swift and straightforward installation.

The ambitious plan to revive Get active @ Northfield, included the creation of a gym and wellness centre, a larger changing village, a multi-purpose studio, therapy suites for use by NHS Grampian and an upgraded 25 metre pool.

Contractors CHAP Group and architects Space Solutions selected our facade products for the project, which was funded by Aberdeen City Council and Sport Aberdeen. A significant challenge of the project was the potential for long lead times for materials and specialist services, as construction began over lockdown. The team addressed this by choosing materials which avoided shortages or long delivery times – our products enabled time efficiency, with excellent availability and lead times. Our technical support was on hand to back-check any technical discussions during the design stage.

The entire project was almost 2000 m2 area, so significant quantities of our products were required, and both the quick delivery and fast installation process were hugely beneficial in completing the project within the timescale. As Angus Smith from Space Solutions said, the Kingspan products were chosen for a number of reasons; “They were readily procurable in a difficult market at the time of project delivery, whilst being reliable products in terms of performance and technical support. Overall, they provided a range of options for solutions which local contractors would be confident in undertaking.”

1000 m2 of QuadCore KS1000RW Roof Panel and 180 m2 of QuadCore Topdek Roof Panel were used in the project, contributing to an enhanced thermal performance. QuadCore insulation delivers high levels of thermal performance, meaning that thinner and lighter roofs can be installed compared to alternative systems – an important factor when dealing with existing structures.

As the products are manufactured offsite, onsite waste is reduced, whilst the ease of disassembly at end of life means panels can potentially be reused or recycled. With the thermal efficiency of the QuadCore technology, and the airtightness it provides, the project will have higher overall energy savings, contributing towards the building envelope meeting current energy standards, and a greatly improved energy performance over the original roof. QuadCore is a low Global Warming Potential solution, with Kingspan insulated panels produced in the UK being certified by the BES 6001 (Framework Standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products) ‘Very Good’.

On the walls of the building, Kingspan RF-Design Recess Fix Cassettes and QuadCore Karrier Wall Panels were installed. The Kingspan RF-Design Recess Fix Cassettes were used on all elevations of the new building envelope and a link-over section of the original building to integrate the design appearance. QuadCore Karrier Wall Panel was used to support the cassettes and provide large sections of the new building elevation with high levels of thermal efficiency.

The RF-Design Recess Fix Cassettes also give the facility its distinctive grey and white patterned façade. These can be specified in a variety of lengths and widths.
