Office Development, Canary Wharf

Case study

Iron technology leader Saint-Gobain PAM UK, part of leading materials group Saint-Gobain, has secured a significant order for its Ensign Soil and Rainwater system for installation at the prestigious new 530,000 sq ft skyscraper office block at 25 Churchill Place, Canary Wharf.

Also known as BP4, the 23 storey high tower construction, which incorporates high-quality commercial Grade A accommodation, a ‘green’ roof and low carbon technologies, is located towards the east end of Canary Wharf adjacent to the recently enhanced Churchill Place retail mall. Above ground construction commenced in February 2012 and the project is scheduled for completion in July 2014.

Ensign Soil, which will also be installed in the development’s nine storey toilet core, was specified by MEP consultants Hilson Moran. It is being supplied by BSS Drainage and installed by Axis Plumbing.

Gary Zumeris of Saint-Gobain PAM UK comments: “This contract further endorses Ensign as the leading above and below ground solution on the market. Ensign is the only drainage system tested to a kitemark approved to BS EN 877 and offers specifiers, contractors and installers a fit-and-forget system which outperforms all rival materials. The requirement for optimal fire resistance throughout the BP4 development was a key factor in Saint-Gobain PAM securing this contract. Ensign cast iron is non-combustible, does not require any fire protection, will not propagate fire and will not emit toxic gases like PVC systems, or sooty smog like HDPE. Our remit also includes the provision of products from Saint-Gobain PAM’s new VortX cast-iron floor drainage range.”

Ensign comprises pipes and fittings from 50-600mm diameter for above ground applications and 100, 150-600mm diameter for below ground. The system can be connected by cast iron mechanical joints or push-fit joints for both above and below ground applications and is considered to be the most comprehensive and versatile cast iron system on the market.

Designed in accordance with BS EN1253:2004, the Saint-Gobain PAM VortX range comprises 60 components that can all be installed in conjunction to create complete floor drainage solutions. Products in the range include gratings and rodding eyes in nickel bronze and stainless steel, cast iron floor and shower gullies, raising pieces, adaptors, inserts and accessories.
