New build home with a modern twist in conservation area

18 Apr 2018
Case study

A modern three bedroom dwelling has replaced a derelict medical surgery, situated between two listed buildings in a conservation area.

Planning conditions stipulated that the new build had to visually appear as single storey from street level, which was been achieved with an innovative design, creating the illusion of a one-storey structure featuring a dramatic glazed elevation over two storeys to include a basement.

Reclamation Yellow Stock bricks were the natural choice for the boundary walls which had to be repaired and extended, with part of the dwelling set into it.

These traditional handmade bricks undergo an extensive ageing process to give the appearance of a genuine reclaimed brick, which helps them blend in perfectly with the salvaged brickwork from site to provide a seamless finish.

The project was nominated for several awards:

  • RICS London 2016 Awards
  • Homebuilding & Renovating Readers’ Choice 2015 Awards
  • Homebuilding & Renovating Best Contemporary Home 2015 Awards
