Kebony’s triumph at The Point two years on

Case study

The Point at Polzeath was transformed into a premier destination for the environmentally friendly traveller. Following the unveiling of seven luxury Kebony-clad holiday apartments, the popular golf and country club continues to fuse contemporary style with ecology and last year decided to extend its use of Kebony, a beautiful wood recommended by leading architects, throughout the bar and restaurant terrace.

All the apartments at The Point feature spacious living areas with floor to ceiling sliding doors and private terraces, in order to make the most of Cornwall’s rich and varied setting. Much of the furniture within the apartments has been ‘up cycled’ to ensure the interior design matches the ecological focus of the exterior construction materials.

The project takes design inspiration from Cornwall’s rolling hills and Atlantic coastline. The Kebony wood, in combination with local stone, perfectly complements this picturesque scenery and enables the building to blend seamlessly into its natural surroundings. This process was aided by the natural mellowing of the beautiful wood cladding which, after two years, now exudes a muted silver grey patina that is noticeably more subtle than its original deep brown appearance.

Developed in Norway, the patented Kebony technology uses an environmentally friendly process, which permanently enhances the properties of sustainable softwood with a bio-based liquid derived from agricultural crop waste. This environmentally friendly process results in a wood that is exceptionally hard-wearing, with all the qualities of a tropical hardwood without the need for costly treatments or maintenance. This makes Kebony the perfect material for a structure exposed to the elements right on the coast.

Eva Davies, owner of The Point at Polzeath said: “Increasing our use of Kebony has been an exciting and rewarding process for us all - the guests love the look of the apartment buildings and the fact that it is all environmentally friendly. We think it’s a beautiful material that continues to enhance the overall look of The Point.”

Adrian Pye, International Sales Director at Kebony commented: “The Point is such a stunning project and the owners and designers all truly believe in building with an environmental focus which is great to see. We’re thrilled that Kebony continues to go down so well with both owners and guests”
