Renovating a Glasgow landmark: the roofing challenge
The West Boat House, a historic landmark in Glasgow dating back to 1905, had fallen into a state of disrepair. The £3.05m restoration project, led by ARPL Architects and overseen by Glasgow Building Preservation Trust, aimed to bring the building back to its original state while ensuring it remains a busy hub for rowing clubs for generations to come. The roof was a major focus as the tile had completely worn away and was very unstable. The challenge was to find a suitable roofing solution that would fit in with the building's historical context, provide durability and meet budget constraints.
The Humber Flanders tile
The architect, ARPL Architects, found the perfect solution in the Humber Flanders tile by Wienerberger. Several factors influenced the decision to use the tile, including its traditional, cross cambered design and its homemade feel. The mottle colour and texture was also a deciding factor as it matched with the original tile, effectively recreating the historic charm of West Boat House.
While handmade clay tiles were considered, the machine-made Humber Flanders tile offered a cost-effective option without compromising on quality and longevity. The tile's durability makes sure that the roof will remain in excellent condition for the next 50-60 years.
A transformed West Boat House
As part of the glow-up, the listed building saw improvement in accessibility, new facilities with flexible, multi-use spaces and a bespoke pontoon to allow for safer access to the river for a wide range of activities. The new roof beautifully complemented the look of the boat house and matched the original style perfectly.
The roofing contractor, Ferguson Kellock Ltd, was impressed with the quality and finish of the Humber Flanders tile, and ARPL Architects were over the moon with the result.
The completed project received industry recognition in the prestigious NFRC Scottish Roofing Awards 2022 in the Roof Tiling category. The awards celebrate a selection of the best of roofing, cladding and rainscreen projects in Scotland. The judges rewarded standout projects for quality workmanship, innovation, strong supply chain management and impressive responses to challenges. West Boat House won its category, with judges commending the very clean and level roof lines.
Celebrating the reopening
The West Boat House had a grand reopening ceremony, welcoming more than 250 people, including Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Harry Leask, representatives from funders, project partners and volunteers.

Thanks to the Humber Flanders tile from Wienerberger, the West Boat House now stands proud as a fully restored and functional landmark on Glasgow Green. It continues to serve as a busy hub for rowing clubs and a place of historical significance, welcoming visitors and athletes alike to enjoy its beauty and heritage.
