Community Campus Finds Firm Footing with Kingspan

2 Sep 2021
Case study

The Scottish border town of Jedburgh is now home to a stunning learning campus offering provision for children from ages 2 -18 along with a range of community facilities. The facility has been carefully designed to support the health and wellbeing of all who use it with a specification featuring Kingspan Kooltherm K103 Floorboard.

Jedburgh Grammar School has been developed by Scottish Borders Council and Hub South East Scotland with local residents voting to decide its name. Stallan-Brand oversaw the design of the school, with BAM Construction acting as main contractor. The campus replaces the previous, outdated education provision within the former royal burgh and provides a centre for regeneration, including a community café and library, 2 and 3G sports pitches and a number of additional facilities for vocational training, further education and life-long learning.

Kingspan Kooltherm K103 was installed across the ground floor of the campus buildings. With a thermal conductivity of 0.018 W/mK across all thicknesses, it offers the thinnest commonly used insulation solution to achieve any desired U-value. In addition to helping to reduce the building’s long-term energy demand, the boards are also expected to facilitate greater control of thermal comfort within the classrooms, supporting student health and attainment in line with the best practice guidance within Building Bulletin 101. This was a key concern on the project, as Stallan-Brand explained:

“One of the primary goals for the project was to provide an asset which enhances the health and wellbeing of the wider community. To achieve this, the building has been designed to maintain natural light levels, air quality and comfort. A Building Energy Management System has been integrated throughout the facility, using CO2 and temperature sensors to carefully control and monitor service systems including heat recovery technologies. In addition, the building fabric specification ensures high levels of thermal insulation, allowing more responsive control of classroom thermal comfort whilst limiting demand and operational costs.”

Kingspan Kooltherm K103 is suitable for use on solid and suspended floors and its excellent thermal performance can limit the depth of floor constructions, helping to reduce the scale of groundworks. All Kingspan Insulation UK manufacturing sites operate at net-zero energy, on an aggregated basis, across the year and the boards are certified ‘Excellent’ under BES 6001 (Framework Standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products).
