Blackdown Green Roof chosen for award-winning Barratt Homes

Green roof specialist Blackdown Horticultural Consultants has created a roof-top haven for the residents of Barratt Homes’ latest award-winning development at The Zone in Bristol.

Situated in the vibrant Temple Quay, The Zone is an exciting development of stunning contemporary apartments that received The Daily Telegraph’s ‘Your New Home Award’ for Best City Development.

Working closely alongside architect WYG Planning & Design, Blackdown used its unique horticultural expertise to create the intensive green roof as part of a flagship construction model from Barratt, providing modern city living through sustainable building methods.

Blackdown installed the intensive planting system of mixed shrubs and herbaceous perennials to raised bed areas constructed from recycled sleepers and ornamental arbour plant supports. The intensive shrubs provide a mixture of deciduous and evergreen species to provide colour throughout the year, whilst assisting with rainwater run-off and providing natural insulation for the building. Species were carefully chosen to give the roof a maximum chance of success in its harbour-side location.

Blackdown green roofs vary from extensive and bio-diverse types, which require minimal irrigation and maintenance, to intensive roofs, which are suited for areas of public and recreational use and require more tending.

Blackdown Horticultural Consultants is a specialist in intensive and extensive green roof systems bringing more than 40 years experience in horticulture and plant knowledge to the construction industry. It offers a range of roofing options and can also provide design, supply and installation input for ground-based planting schemes.
