Balancing planning requirements of reducing energy consumption and preserving environment aesthetics is simplified with an innovative solution from Passivent.

Often, a bone of contention, particularly in conservation areas or protected buildings, is the visual impact of a ventilation terminal or chimney protruding through the roof- whether in individual homes or multi-occupancy dwellings.

Passivent’s solution is to offer a choice of discreet ridge and in-line roof terminals that blend into the overall roof without detrimental impact on the eyeline. As a result, the company’s natural iPSV (intelligent Passive Stack Ventilation) and iMEV (intelligent Mechanical Ventilation) systems can be installed in almost any domestic structure, and still perform effectively, meeting all Regulatory requirements and delivering installation and running cost savings.

The terminals are AA fire rated, enabling incorporation into the roof regardless of proximity of neighbouring property, and can be matched to any RAL colour, further minimizing aesthetic impact. An integral condensation trap prevents any potential condensation running back into the home.

Independent research has highlighted even Passivent’s standard Passive Stack Ventilation (PSV) system can cut initial installation costs by over half, reduce the DER (dwelling emission rate) under SAP, and contribute towards an 83% saving in lifetime costs- whilst still helping achieve up to Level 6 under the Code for Sustainable Homes.
Passivent iPSV harnesses natural air principles of convection and the venturi effect to function. Internal moisture-laden air rises, and air pressure increases with height creating suction. Thus the internal air is drawn out through roof terminals, and fresh air drawn in through tricklevents to replace it. Intelligent humidity sensitive ceiling mounted extracts control the flow of air to the outside according to moisture content, allowing the stale air to ventilate through roof-mounted terminals while minimizing the amount of heat loss through over-ventilation.

As it responds to relative humidity levels within the room, Passivent iPSV ventilates only as, where and when required, optimizing heat retention and cutting CO2 emissions whilst eliminating the need for electrical wiring, fans, heat recovery units and switches. This not only reduces installation costs, but cuts lifetime maintenance expenses for both the system and the building.

Passivent iMEV utilizes the same principles, for multi-occupancy buildings. Individual wet rooms are linked by ducting to a supplementary low wattage fan in the roofspace that helps maintain adequate airflow throughout the building, extracting the used air through the roof terminal.
