15 year old mock-Tudor house, Essex

Case study

A fabulous orangery designed by Mumford & Wood Garden Rooms, the award-winning manufacturer of bespoke timber windows, doors and conservatories, has been incorporated into the remodelling of a beautiful family home in Essex.

The 15 year old mock-Tudor house was totally redesigned by main design and build contractor Obeney Construction of Loughton, Essex, a family run business and developer of luxurious homes throughout south east England.  In the new design, which involved removal of the front façade and a very large extension to the rear of the property, a Mumford & Wood Garden Room that overlooks secluded and mature gardens has been designed into the project.  At the heart of this inspirational home, the vast area provides space for a large designer-kitchen, dining area and contemporary home cinema.

Mumford & Wood’s traditional-style Conservation™ casements were specified throughout the three-floor property.  A robust Mumford & Wood entrance door with fixed sidelights, and overhead the iconic arched Georgian window for which the company is renowned, together create a dramatic, light-filled atrium hall spanning the two-storey height.

“We always specify Mumford & Wood when we can,” says Joe Obeney, Managing Director, Obeney Construction, “because it’s the only way we can ensure the best product, the best design, technical support and fantastic aftercare service.”

The build project was already underway when Mumford & Wood launched the Garden Rooms concept, a totally bespoke supply-only facility for developers.  “It was the perfect solution for this property and our very design-conscious clients who had not heard of Mumford & Wood but trusted our recommendation.  It doesn’t look as though we’ve stuck a conservatory on the back as an after-thought, more a coordinated, integral part of the overall design and structure that matches perfectly with the windows and French doorsets.  It works beautifully.”

The homeowners are particularly pleased with the large roof lantern in the orangery, also made bespoke by Mumford & Wood, who said: “We’d never have thought to include a roof lantern but it has opened up a very large space and flooded it with light.  The windows and doors are large but having overhead light has made a big difference.  It’s even nice to look down on from the top floor windows, so much better than looking at a pitched or flat roof.”

Conservation™ windows and doors by Mumford & Wood are manufactured from knot-free, engineered timber which produces strength and durability, promotes stability and reduces maintenance periods.  Authentic detailing and design celebrates original styles whilst providing superb acoustic and thermal performance with U-values that surpass current Building Regulations.  Security is of paramount importance and superior multipoint locking systems that meet Secured by Design accreditation are designed as standard into many Conservation™ products.  This double glazed, factory-finished collection is available in high quality micro-porous paint or timber stain with a choice of architectural hardware styles and finishes.
