Rethinking the Urban Landscape: Beauty

Exhibitions
8 Jan–10 Feb 2015

Talking about ‘beauty’ is a tricky subject in design, let alone in the world of planners and finance. However, beautiful places are preferred, sought after and highly valued. People want to live and work in attractive areas and that attraction is closely connected with more green space. Such space is not about having a grisly patch of poorly managed grass… it requires powerful working elements such as mature trees, which provide shade and clean and cool the air. Natural scents and the sonic baffle of large-scale greenery give pleasure and delight to senses beyond the simply visual. Research indicates that living within a view of this kind of environment makes us healthier and happier. So beauty matters in landscape – it is not fluffy, or even flowery, it is functional. Beauty is often seen as a luxury but in a time of austerity, it matters more than ever.
