Storstrøm – ‘the world’s most humane prison’

Thu 1 Mar 2018

Acclaimed as ‘the world’s most humane prison’, C.F. Møller's Storstrøm  sets the bar for prisons around the world. The design aims to provide inmates with an environment that can deliver new standards in achieving rehabilitation and wellbeing.

Storstrøm is Denmark’s second-largest penitentiary and is one of the most talked about projects of 2017 for its pioneering features. When it comes to imprisonment Denmark has long taken a different approach to the UK, and can claim much lower recidivism rates. Is Storstrøm the sort of prison we should and can aspire to in the UK?

The evening will be an exploration of architectural achievement and an opportunity to hear directly from architects C.F. Møller (currently also designing the LEGO headquarters) and landscape architects Marianne Levinsen Landskab about the design process and execution of this iconic project.

Following the architects' presentations, Prison Reform Trust will open the panel discussion with a short response on where the UK’s prison system is today, what reforms are needed and whether a prison like Storstrøm could become a reality in the UK.

The evening will conclude with an audience Q&A .

Speakers include:

 – Mads Mandrup Hansen, project architect at C.F. Møller

 – Marianne Levinsen, project landscape architect and founder of Marianne Levinsen Landskab

 –  Peter Dawson, director of the Prison Reform Trust

Chair: Lewis Blackwell, executive director of strategy and development at The Built Environment Trust

The event will start at 6.30pm and finish at 8.00pm. Registration will open at 6.00pm.

This project and event is part of the Making Wellbeing exhibition and event series.
