The Construction Industry Council (CIC) is the representative forum for the professional bodies, research organisations and specialist business associations in the construction industry. CIC was established in 1988 with five founder members and since then has grown in size and influence to become the largest pan-industry body concerned with all aspects of the built environment.
Today, CIC occupies a unique role within the UK construction industry. Its members represent over 500,000 professionals working for, and in association with, the construction industry and more than 25,000 construction firms. It is the representative forum for the industry's professional bodies, research organisations and specialist trade associations.
In addition, CIC represents the views of the higher level of the industry (professional, managerial and technical) in ConstructionSkills – the Sector Skills Council for construction. ConstructionSkills is a partnership between CIC, CITB-ConstructionSkills and CITB Northern Ireland. CIC also has a network of Regional Committees across the UK who a aim to provide a single voice for the industry in discussions and establish a network of regional organisations to consider issues relevant to the region and to promote public awareness of the construction industry and provide an influential, collective voice for the Built Environment.
The breadth and depth of its membership means that CIC is the only single body able to speak with authority on the diverse issues connected with construction without being constrained by the self-interest of any particular sector of the industry.
