Architect: Studio Four
Town: Prahran, Melbourne in Australia
Studio Four, have converted a single story family building in Prahran, Melbourne in Australia, into a spacious family home fit for 21st-century living.
To achieve a more contemporary layout, the house has been separated into different zones for entertaining and relaxing. The addition of a two-storey extension at the back of the property provides space for an open family kitchen-diner on the ground floor and two extra children’s bedrooms above. Located at the centre of the property, the living room serves as the heart of the home, while the master bedroom, study, and bathroom are at the front of the house.
To gain an aesthetic harmony between the older parts of the property and the modern extension, Studio Four used a timber book wall in the passage surrounding the living room, heightening the ceilings and drawing attention to the period detailing.
A new playroom leads off from the kitchen and extends into the original garden, which has been cut in half, creating two separate terraces, one at the back of the property and an enclosed courtyard next to the living room, which establishes a seamless connection with the outdoors.
