Organico, Philipp Hainke

Organico, by designer Philipp Hainke utilizes traditional and renewable resources for the development of innovative composite material.

An adhesive, composed of calcium hydroxide and casein—a protein commonly found in milk—is used to press hemp fibers and shives into solid forms. Through extensive research, the optimal composition and structure was developed: a sandwich material with a cover of hemp fibre and a core of hemp shives, which is stable and light.

The resulting objects, which range from chairs to free-standing acoustic panels are characterized by an appealing design aesthetic that lies somewhere between natural and technological. Ribbed, earthy textures and natural but vibrant colours add to the appeal to the material. In a purposeful way, the objects preserve the archaic character of their ingredients—hemp shives and fibre.
