A leading tiler from Lancashire has praised the unique time-saving qualities of a multifunctional tile substrate for wall areas from Schlüter-Systems
for allowing him to create perfect tile installations.
Mark Ellam, from Imperial Tiling and Stone in Preston, specialises in high-end tile and stone installations and says the benefits of the universal substrate preparation board Schlüter®-KERDI-BOARD
means it is quick and easy to create the flattest and most even substrate to tile.
Mark comments, “To achieve a first-class result good preparation is absolutely vital. I could spend inordinate amounts of time messing around trying to correct uneven walls, or stripping back old adhesive residues and painted surfaces, however I find it far easier to over-board with, or rip out old walls and replace them with, Schlüter®- KERDI-BOARD. The time saved is money saved and also money earned as it allows me to finish the job in a shorter time period and move onto other projects. Schlüter®- KERDI-BOARD is a great surface to fix to with the reassurance of more than adequate weight-bearing and 100% bonded waterproofing.
“Some tile backer boards are cement-faced, which makes them water sensitive, but Schlüter®- KERDI-BOARD is the only truly waterproof board I can buy. It is easy and clean to cut using the helpful 10mm grid markings and whilst the board is lightweight it is extremely strong, holding far more weight than plasterboards. It is also very fast and easy to create a bonded waterproof area.”
Carl Stokes, Divisional Manager at Schlüter-Systems, comments, “We’ve been delighted with the enthusiasm that Schlüter®-KERDI-BOARD has created, with tilers such as Mark particularly highlighting how quick and easy the product is to install and how useful its printed guidelines are. These, together with its other characteristics, all combine to provide the very best in tile installations.
“Schlüter®-KERDI-BOARD offers a revolutionary approach to tiling and is unique to the market. Many substrates encountered in new buildings and renovation projects are unsuitable for tile installation and can require comprehensive additional work and waterproofing measures, but Schlüter®-KERDI-BOARD
acts as a multifunctional tile substrate for floor and wall areas, meaning it can be used not just to created bonded waterproofing assemblies with tile coverings but also as a structural panel.”
He adds, “It’s particularly important to note its waterproof qualities as there is a common misconception that water-resistance is the same as waterproof, which simply isn’t the case. In a ceramic tile or stone application, waterproof and water-resistance do not perform the same function.
“A waterproof product such as Schlüter®-KERDI-BOARD does not permit the passage of water / is impervious to water. Meanwhile a water-resistant product means it does not break down in water and is able to resist water penetration to a small degree. There have been examples where people have thought that the water-resistant properties of tiling systems used in installations would serve as adequate waterproofing, only for water to seep into the fabric of buildings through tiled floors and walls.”
As well as being waterproof, temperature resistant and vapour retardant, Schlüter®-KERDI-BOARD is thermally insulating, quick and easy to install, lightweight and therefore easy to handle and transport. It contains no cement or fibreglass, making it eco-friendly, whilst its fleece webbing allows for easy anchoring in thin-bed mortar.
