Keen-eyed viewers of the current series of Channel 4’s ‘Big Brother’ will have spotted not one, but two distinctive wallpaper designs in the bathroom. One is a custom-made floral wallpaper depicting scenes from previous shows, whilst the other is a trend
-setting glass mosaic ‘wallpaper’, consisting of thousand upon thousand of tiny mosaic tiles or tesserae
. Designed and made in Italy and now available in the UK, this innovative mosaic
wallcovering forms part of the Trend Wallpaper
collection, designed to create outstanding feature walls with tactile appeal. Prices start from £180 per square metre.
One of a collection of 64 patterns and 130 colourways, the BB-featured wallpaper is Damask from the Classic style theme, which brings patterns from the past right up-to-date, in the simplest, most sophisticated shapes and shades. Like paper wallcoverings, it has the repeated modular structure of wallpaper and is supplied on backing material, ready to fix on most interior and exterior surfaces, yet it is shiny, touchable, hardwearing, moisture resistant and, yes, intrinsically precious. Since they comprise tiny 1.5cm (⅝”) square tiles, the pattern repeats can be applied smoothly across flat or contoured substrates, on walls, floors, ceilings, swimming pools
- nowhere is out of bounds.
Wallpaper is perfect for humid and moisture-laden environments, which is one reason why Big Brother’s interior designers chose it to grace the house’s bathroom
, outside shower and plunge pool. The producers contacted Trend
in Italy three months before the launch show, and the company subsequently supplied 60 square metres of Damask tiles to the Elstree film studios.
Big Brother’s own contracted tilers fitted the wallpaper and its prominent positioning alongside the ‘Tree of Temptation’, around the vanity units and sunken bath, and surrounding the outdoor pool, should ensure plenty of screen time during the show’s 13 week run.
Epitomising the versatility and creativity of modern glass mosaics, the Trend
Italia design team, headed by Federica Bisazza, has also rendered the iconic Big Brother eye motif as a classic mosaic wall panel (see image
), with each tiny square representing a single 1cm x 1cm tile. The resultant panel would measure 4m x 2.52m and feature almost 80,000 individual tiles in 50 different shades; the price would be around £4,500 for the 1cm2 version or under £3,000 using larger 1.5cm2 mosaics. This would certainly make an eyecatching memento for an avid Big Brother fan and, indeed, any personal design or picture can be rendered to produce customised wallpaper or a single decorative panel, to special order.
