System Ardex specified for new £11 million centre for sports & media.
The highly successful duo of ARDEX UK and Cerface Limited Floor and Wall Tiling Contractors of Gillingham, Kent, recently provided a 2500m2 tiling and grouting solution at the newly developed Tonbridge School Centre for Sports and Media. The school is one of the UK’s premier independent boarding schools offering the highest quality education and facilities to boys aged 13 –18.
Officially opened on 13th June 2008 by double Olympic Champion, Lord Sebastian Coe, the £11 million Centre for Sports and Media is a landmark in national sporting provision, and was an integral part of the successful bid by Tonbridge School to be recognised as an official training centre for the 2012 Olympics. The Sports Centre contains a 25 metre six lane swimming pool, a 5-court sports hall, climbing wall, a multi-purpose room, a fitness suite, a classroom and social areas.
Cerface Limited specified a range of tiling products manufactured by ARDEX for extensive use within this new build project, including tiling to the pool surrounds and walls, changing rooms, showers, offices, reception, foyer, café, bar and toilets.
ARDEX X 7 R Rapid Setting Flexible Tile Adhesive was used to fix the pool surround floor tiles. Suitable for fixing all types of wall and floor tiles including porcelain, ARDEX X 7 R is ready to be walked on and grouted just 2 hours after application. With BS EN 12004 C2 FT classification, ARDEX X 7 R is the perfect choice for swimming pools, showers, kitchens, and offices, where minimising downtime is essential. In addition, ARDEX X 7 R offers excellent slump resistance, superior application properties and suitability for use with underfloor heating.
ARDEX X 7 G PLUS grey flexible tile adhesive with built-in admix, was selected to fix the remaining floor and wall tiles. Developed to conform to BS EN 12004 C2 TE standards, ARDEX X 7 G PLUS achieves approximately 20% more coverage per kg compared to a traditional cement-based tile adhesive. With enhanced adhesion and flexibility, as well as excellent slump resistance and high initial grab, ARDEX X 7 G PLUS is ideal for all types of floor and wall tiles, including fully vitrified, porcelain and mosaics in virtually all types of situations including swimming pools and wet areas.
Prior to tiling the eleven shower cubicles, the walls and floors were tanked with ARDEX WPC, which provides rapid drying waterproof protection. ARDEX WPC helps to minimise downtime as tile fixing can commence just 2 hours after application of the second waterproofing coat.
The tile joints of the pool tank were grouted with ARDEX WA epoxy grout. Easy to apply and clean off, ARDEX WA provides a waterproof and chemically resistant joint from 2-12mm wide and is the economical and ideal choice for use where high standards of hygiene and cleanliness are vital.
The wall and floor tile joints were grouted using ARDEX-FLEX FL grey rapid setting flexible grout, which providess beneficial features including a built-in admix and enhanced water resistance.
“The creation of the Tonbridge School Centre for Sports and Media is a real triumph for all those involved. Through our involvement we were able to showcase both our tiling expertise, and indeed, the versatility and premium performance of ARDEX’s tiling systems”, remarked Chris Clark of Cerface Limited.
