Swistherm gives The Unicorn a fair face

The M.R. Swistherm External Wall Insulation system from Alumasc has provided the façade for the new Unicorn Theatre in London, which opened December 2005. The £13 million theatre, sited in the centre of the vibrant South Bank area near HMS Belfast and the GLC HQ, offers high quality theatre and education programmes to over 100,000 children each year, many from disadvantaged communities.

Alumasc was specified for this project as M.R. Swistherm enabled the architect’s vision to be realised - a striking modern design in a classic grey and white finish to complement the surrounding London architecture. The thermal characteristics of Swistherm were also an important consideration, with the system offering a high performance insulated façade solution, encapsulating the building structure. Swistherm has a life expectancy of in excess of 30 years, thus providing long-term peace of mind, and this, along with the excellent technical backup and warranties offered by Alumasc were also key factors in the decision to specify the system.

The M.R Swistherm system is surfaced with lightweight silicone renders from Alumasc’s M.R ST range, providing a wealth of possibilities in texture and colour. The advanced surface render used with the system provides high water resistance without a thick build up of material, and alternatives of lightweight silicone based or eco-friendly mineral are offered.

The striking angular architecture for the Unicorn Theatre was designed by Keith Williams Architects, the installation of the render by Specialist External Render Systems Ltd and main construction was carried out by Mansell Construction Services Ltd.
