Selectaglaze recaptures the hush at Brown’s Hotel
With over 40 years experience working within hotels, Royal Warrant Holder, Selectaglaze Ltd., the UK’s leading secondary glazing specialist, was the ideal partner when it came to working with The Rocco Forte Collection on the refurbishment of the prestigious Brown’s Hotel.
Located in the heart of London’s Mayfair, Brown’s Hotel has recently undergone a £24 million restoration under the watchful eye of TRFC’s Director of Design, Olga Polizzi. Part of the upgrade was to provide much needed noise insulation to a number of guest rooms and luxury suites without interfering with the individually designed décor and contemporary elegant flavour of the rooms. Selectaglaze designed, manufactured and installed discrete and highly effective secondary glazing to ensure that Brown’s guests would not be disturbed by the hustle and bustle of its busy central London location.
Brown’s has the distinction of being the capital’s first ever hotel. Opened in 1837 by James Brown, Lord Byron’s butler, and his wife, Lady Byron’s maid, to “provide genteel accommodation for discerning people” the hotel originally consisted of four adjacent houses. A few years later it was extended to incorporate a total of 11 Georgian town houses, including the neighbouring St. George’s Hotel.
The secondary windows have been sympathetically designed to match the primary sash windows and balcony doors and Selectaglaze worked closely with front of house to ensure installation was undertaken with minimal disruption to guests and the normal running of the Hotel.
The windows were specified with laminated glass to provide high noise insulation levels and additional safety. Sound tests conducted at the Taywood Laboratory demonstrate that Selectaglaze systems can achieve 45dB sound reduction and so ensure a quiet and peaceful environment, even in busy city centres. Secondary glazing will also reduce heat loss and almost eliminate draughts making rooms more comfortable and improving the energy performance of the building.
