Roofing services at all time high for Birmingham schools

M.R. Site Services, has just completed the supply of comprehensive specialist roofing services to building envelope specialist contractors Lakesmere at a newly built Building Schools for the Future (BSF) project in Birmingham.

This flagship BSF Birmingham project, HML Schools, is a combination of three schools: Holte (secondary), Mayfield (secondary special needs) and Lozells (primary) on a site adjacent to the existing Holte school in the Newtown area of Birmingham.  The PFI project is designed by Alsop Sparch and Archial Birmingham.
In addition to its specialist area of aluminium welding of the Kalzip cranked roof sheets, M.R. Site Services has designed, manufactured and installed many other roof details with a total project value of some £115,000.

Most notable amongst these services is 680 linear metres of specially made aluminium handrail.  This was an essential requirement for all three buildings as a safe environment was necessary to allow future maintenance of a great deal of plant, such as air conditioning units and exposed ducting and pipework at roof level.  The handrail is fitted to the perimeter of the roof and also around various ‘courtyard openings’ at the centre of the buildings.

Due to the size of some very large components needed for maintenance work on the roof, M.R. Site Services was commissioned to manufacture some extra large access hatches.  Three of these have been supplied and the largest of these at 3.5m x 1.5m is motorised and operated by a key on the inside and outside to activate the motor, with a built-in wind sensor too for safety.  All are precision made with aluminium frames, safety glass and seals for air tightness and water tightness.  The company has also produced a specially made matching aluminium door through the wall into the roof plant area.

On the first floor of the school buildings there is a balcony and two teachers’ terraces to walk out onto from the teachers’ common room.   As a single ply membrane was not suitable for these floor areas, Lakesmere specified Roll-a-Flex from M.R. Site Services as a highly durable jointing system allowing high levels of foot traffic.   Roll-a-Flex is a quick to apply liquid acrylic membrane with a polyester fleece reinforced layer for a long lasting weather-tight seal.  It is flexible enough to mould around difficult roof details such as concrete posts, soakers and openings.

John Evans, Contracts Manager for Lakesmere is delighted with how the project has gone, “ I have known and worked with Melvyn Rowberry’s company for twenty-five years so knew the services offered were ideal for the application and also very reliable.”  He continued, “ M.R. Site Services is very adaptable to the inevitably alterations on-site as they arise.  We are very pleased with the work done.  The service has been excellent and everything is as expected”.
