Ridgistorm-XL Electro-Fusion Joint Delivers Stormwater Diversion for Gatwick Airport Scheme

Polypipe Water Management Solutions, the UK’s leading manufacturer of plastic sustainable drainage and water management solutions has supplied a bespoke large diameter pipeline solution using its Ridgistorm-XL product for the construction of a new airside building at Gatwick Airport’s North Terminal.

Ridgistorm-XL was specified for its electro-fusion jointing system. The existing storm drain needed to be relocated and the Ridgistorm-XL pipeline was installed prior to the piling work being carried out for the new building. Concerns over the pipeline integrity as a result of the piling work were negated by using Ridgistorm-XL. The patented electro-fusion jointing method guarantees 100% seal tightness within the pipeline and is the only large diameter plastic pipe system in the UK to incorporate such technology.

Polypipe WMS designed the 750mm diameter pipeline to stiffness class SN1 to cope with the ground conditions and additional piling work carried out on-site. Manufactured as a value-engineered product, Ridgistorm-XL can be designed to any stiffness class that’s appropriate to the project which reduces the amount of material within the pipeline and ensures a cost effective solution is supplied to the contractor.

Dr Jason Shingleton, Marketing and Development Director for Polypipe WMS commented:
“This has been a small but challenging project for us which clearly demonstrates the benefits of the Ridgistorm-XL system. Electro-fusion jointing is relatively new technology in the UK for large diameter pipes, but contractors seemed to have embraced the choice we can offer through Ridgistorm-XL. The adaptability of the system in producing bespoke, value engineered solutions is unique and we’re delighted with how the project progressed.”
