Reprezent 107.3FM, London’s only youth-led radio station, can now breathe easy, thanks to the donation of a free air conditioning system installation from TechniCool Air Conditioning Ltd and Daikin UK.
With an FM listenership of 120,000, Reprezent 107.3FM is the ‘voice of young London’ and campaigns on issues such as mental health, housing and youth unemployment. It has helped thousands of young people develop their skills and talents, represent youth issues and increase their employability.
Based in POPBrixon and occupying three repurposed shipping containers, the radio station is run by Reprezent, an award-winning social enterprise that delivers accredited radio and media training courses for young people aged 13-24, especially those from disadvantaged areas and not in employment, education or training (NEET).
Director of Reprezent, Shane Carey explains, “With over 100 young people broadcasting from Reprezent's studios in POPBrixton, it got incredibly hot and stuffy! The Daikin team visited the studio to find the best solution, and recommended a unit which would work well for our unique environment.”
Donated by Daikin UK and installed for free by TechniCool Air Conditioning based in Coulsdon, Surrey, the new air conditioning system will ensure the radio station has a comfortable indoor climate all year round.
After completing the installation with his colleague, Dominic Newman, TechniCool Air Conditioning Ltd engineer Steve Trowbridge said, “We were privileged to be able to carry out the installation, it’s great to be involved in a project that will positively impact on the future of Reprezent and the young people the organisation supports.”
Installed at the Reprezent radio station is a 5kw single under ceiling unit, part of the FLXS Flexi-wall and ceiling range - ideal for applications where there is limited wall space available. With five fan speeds and vertical auto swing, the system automatically swings up and down to ensure efficient air and temperature distribution throughout the room.
Dirk Slagmulder, Managing Director of Daikin UK said, “When we heard about Reprezent’s work with young people and the issues they were having with uncontrollable temperatures in the studio, we wanted to help out by giving them an even better climate for success. We are lucky to work with like-minded partners, such as TechniCool, who are also keen to make a difference – and they did a great job at POPBrixton. Now the presenters and behind the scenes support technicians at Reprezent can not only enjoy the radio station but also the atmosphere in the studio.”
Constructed entirely from repurposed shipping containers, POPBrixton is a hub for start-up businesses, entrepreneurs and local community groups. At the heart of one of London’s most vibrant communities, the innovative campus has an area for live performance as well as flexible units suitable for retail, office, studio and workshop use.
Concluding, Shane said, “The installation team were really friendly and efficient, and managed to work around lots of hyperactive young people. Our radio station is now so much more comfortable for everyone – it’s amazing the difference a Daikin aircon unit makes! Thank you so much from all the staff and presenters at Reprezent 107.3FM!”
