A simple yet revolutionary insulated panel from Kingspan, which harvests sunlight to generate renewable energy, has contributed to an ‘Excellent’ BREEAM rating for a new Morrisons store in Halifax.
Architects Bowman Riley specified Kingspan EnergiPanelTM
, a unique solar air heating system from Kingspan Insulated Panels
, to transform the new building into its own energy generator.
Morrisons’ has a strategy for environmental management focusing on cutting carbon and preventing waste in its stores and through clever design, their new Illingworth supermarket built my main contractors Kier will not only benefit from the usual high performance energy conservation features of insulated panel technology, but will also become one of the first to use a new generation of intelligent insulated panels to produce green energy
, developed by Kingspan Insulated Panels
primarily for wall applications, is at the vanguard of façade design and can help to deliver up to 31 credits in BREEAM 2008. The system absorbs the sun’s energy and converts it into a renewable power source for air heating systems.
The outer skin of the panel instantly absorbs heat on contact with the sun’s rays and transfers it to air within hollow crowns in the panel’s structure
. Low energy fans or an HVAC system create a suction pressure over the crowns, facilitating airflow through the panel and the heated air is then drawn into a collection chamber before being delivered into the building.
The ingeniously simple system has been installed by Ashford Cladding Systems Ltd of Hull to the southern elevation at Morrisons, where it can collect the maximum sun exposure. It is expected to save around 76 tonnes of CO2 per year, as well as cutting the company’s heating bills
by up to 20 per cent. The installation of Kingspan
’s insulated architectural wall panel with a Micro-Rib profile and a metallic ACM façade from the new Kingspan business Benchmark, on other parts of the building maximise the benefits by ensuring a thermally efficient envelope.
All new Morrisons stores are now benchmarked under the BRE Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) with the aim of building stores with a consistently high standard of environmental performance.
Built on the site of an existing store, the 54,718 ft2 Illingworth supermarket’s other energy saving features include: a combined heat and power system and the first fully LED-lit petrol station in Europe.
The majority of Kingspan
products have an ECO safe insulation core, containing no CFC’s or HCFC’s with a low Global Warming Potential, achieve an “A” or “A+” rating according to the Green Guide to Specification and are available in FIRE safe LPCB insurer-approved form for assured fire performance. They are also fibre-free, removing the risk of loose fibres being released and causing irritation.
