RED BOX DESIGN GROUP ‘BANK ON’ BURLINGTON FOR NORTHERN ROCK HQ
A number of natural stone products from the UK’s leading producer, Cumbria-based Burlington, have been specified by architects, Red Box Design Group, for the Northern Rock head office development in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Constructed over a number of phases, and with the design brief focusing on the creation of a series of buildings as modular forms located either side of an internal ‘street’, Burlington’s natural stone was originally specified as the flooring material for a new reception area. Specified with a mix of flamed and honed finish, the light green Elterwater natural stone floor tiles are used as part of a heated floor construction and were installed by flooring contractors, Plunketts of Northumberland using a Schluter-DITRA uncoupling membrane to eliminate de-bonding.
Also supplied were Burlington honed vanity tops, and upstands and downstands in the same material that feature within the male and female toilets of the three, three and five storey buildings that make up phase 1 of the development.
Continuing the natural stone theme, Red Box Design Group also specified Burlington honed copings and cills. Supplied as 65mm thick modules in Blue/Grey Kirby stone, the cills and copings were manufactured in a variety of bespoke widths and lengths.
Light green Elterwater flooring has also been installed within a number of additional focal areas that are prone to heavy pedestrianised traffic, within a further phase of four buildings that make up the latest phase of the development. Here, again, the honed stone has been combined with a flame textured finished for improved anti-slip properties and installed by flooring contractors A. Andrews & Sons (Marbles & Tiles) Limited of Leeds with under floor heating.
Commenting on the specification of Burlington’s natural stone, Red Box Design Group Partner, Andrew Clark said: “Not only did the colours of the stone make it ideal for this development, it was perfect in terms of its texture and the finishes.”
