Promat Provides Protection for Expanding Shopping Centre

Promat SUPALUX®, from the leading supplier of fire protection products and systems, has been installed in the new food court of Bow Street Mall in Lisburn, Northern Ireland, to protect the existing ground floor and the new floor above.

Belfast-based architects Mervyn Bryson needed to specify 120 minutes fire protection in order for shoppers to leave the mall safely and for firefighters to put out the blaze in the event of a fire.

Because the shopping mall remained open while the expansion was carried out, there was limited space available and it was not possible for the fire protection system to be installed from the ground floor. Instead the main contractor, McLaughlin & Harvey, had to install it from the new extension above. Promat was able provide the client and architect with a fire protection solution which met all the requirements of the project.

Promat SUPALUX® was installed to protect the timber joists and form a barrier between the floors. By installing a layer of 15mm Promat SUPALUX® non-combustible, calcium silicate board, sandwiched between two layers of 19mm tongue & groove flooring boards, fire will be prevented from spreading from the new food court to the retail units below. This method of construction also prevents the board from being damaged due to impact or under-loading.

Promat SUPALUX® fillets were fixed to the side and underside of the joist to protect them from burning and to ensure that the floors’ load bearing ability would be maintained. Rock wool insulation also forms an important part of the system, providing insulation and reducing the heat transfer to the floor above. This is an important element of the construction as the fire temperature can reach up to 1,000°C.

The complete construction was designed by Promat Technical Services.
