Privacy and Dignity at the flick of a switch Spacelite from Planet Partitioning

Planet Partitioning, the UK’s largest independent partitioning specialist, has completed a prestigious fit-out for the Sunderland Royal Hospital as part of its newly built, four storey wing housing a state-of-the-art ICCU (Intensive Coronary Care Unit). Planet harnessed the latest in liquid crystal glass technology with its Spacelite product for the facades, doors and dividing walls of the 18 single bed rooms within the ICCU; and also constructed a double glazed 30/30 fire-rated window, with integral blinds, in the rear wall of each room.  An intuitive in-room control system allows each wall and blind to be individually operated, providing privacy and dignity for patients at the flick of switch.

The project presented unique challenges for Planet in order to meet the operational requirements of the ICCU. For example, the Spacelite doors had to open to 180º to allow ease of access for beds and trolleys while still accommodating the necessary electrical feed, and complex in-room controls had to be configured which allowed the dividing walls to be operable from both sides.  The final solution is contemporary and attractive, plus also offers the highest standards of hygiene along with low maintenance requirements.

On the same floor, Planet also supplied a quantity of 30/30, 60/60 and non fire rated timber-framed screens and windows to the reception area and stairwell. The further three floors of the building contain additional ward space offering single and four bedded rooms along with isolation rooms. Again Planet supplied 30 minute fire-rated, timber-framed windows to the facade of each room also glazed with hi-tech Spacelite and 30/30, 60/60 and non fire rated windows to other areas including receptions and stairwells.

Architects for the project were West Yorkshire based HDP Architects and Planet worked closely throughout with modular building specialist Britspace. The ground floor and basement of the new wing was constructed using traditional methods but the steel-frame, modular four floors above were constructed off-site at Britspace’s factory in East Yorkshire and then delivered and joined to the existing main hospital building.
