Olsen Doors chosen for green National Trust project
Doors from the Olsen Doors and Windows lift and sliding range were used as one of the main features of the National Trust’s new Castle Drogo visitor centre, set in one of the most outstanding areas of natural beauty in Devon. Said to be one of Sir Edwin Lutyens most remarkable works, Castle Drogo, set above Teign Gorge near Drewsteignton was the last castle to be built in England. It has dramatic views over Dartmoor, and at a height of 900 feet above sea level is set in one of the National Trust’s highest gardens.
The visitor centre was opened in June of this year and the client, The National Trust, the architects Harrison Sutton Partnership and main contractors, Midas Construction, are said to be delighted with the finished project.
LARGE SLIDING DOORS MEET GREEN REQUIREMENTS
Partner Mr Chris Cunningham of Harrison Sutton told us, “The Castle Drogo Visitor Centre was a very green project and we chose Olsen Doors’ products because of their environmental credentials and also because we knew the products very well. We wanted to specify very large sliding doors that would open up the inside of the visitor centre to the outside. This would make it easier for people to carry their drinks and refreshments out to enjoy them in the beautiful surroundings of the building.”
DOORS, SCREENS AND WINDOWS IN MATCHING RAL COLOUR
Mr Cunningham continued “The doors have a 2.5 metre slide and we knew the Olsen product was of a quality such that we could specify it with confidence. Olsen was able to offer matching glazed screens and also complementary windows so that we could use one supplier for the entire glazing specification. We also needed the windows and doors to be prefinished in a special moss grey colour (RAL 7030). Olsen is one of the few companies we know who can offer this colour matching service.”
EASE OF ACCESS AND OPERATION
What’s more, the doors give ease of access with low thresholds meeting part M of Building Regulations accessibility criteria for wheelchairs. In addition, Olsen’s sliding doors are designed with ease of operation in mind – the standard rolling gear copes easily with up to 250 kilos weight of glass and frame.
The success of the installation was that it met the design criteria - achieving the desired aesthetic appearance - whilst creating a light airy space accessible by all. We feel sure Sir Edwin would be very pleased with the finished visitor centre were he alive today to see it!
