No Bogey For Golf Club Waterproofing
-- Solution Prevents Water Hazard
The only water hazards at the Bicester Golf and Country Club are likely to be out on the course and not in the bathrooms, thanks to waterproofing from the market leader in essential tile protection, Schlüter-Systems.
To prevent the club being handicapped by its tile installation failing in future, building contractor Harmonix Construction Director John Farragher installed the popular waterproofing and uncoupling membrane Schlüter®-DITRA on the floors in all 54 en-suite bathrooms and the two bridal suite bathrooms.
In addition, Schlüter®-KERDI-DRAIN was used to complete the waterproofing system in four wetrooms used by guests who may have difficulty accessing baths and shower cubicles.
The Schlüter waterproofing products, along with movement joint and edge protection profiles, were supplied by Swindon-based Tradsol Wetroom Solutions. Tradsol Director Dave Bates says: “Schlüter is a very important part of any tiling work, in particular to provide an effective waterproofing solution for bathrooms and wetrooms like those at Bicester Golf and Country Club.”
With so much water and moisture always present in bathrooms and wetrooms there is a very real danger of it seeping through into the fabric of the building.
If effective waterproofing is not fitted, the tile assembly is likely to fail, water could leak through into the room below, and over time there’ll be damage to the structure of the building.
As well as Schlüter®-DITRA, the full waterproofing solution from Schlüter-Systems Ltd which was used at the Bicester Golf and Country Club, included the Schlüter®-KERDI waterproofing mat, the special waterproofing corner fitments Schlüter®-KERDI-KERECK to produce completely watertight inside and outside corners and the Schlüter®-KERDI-KEBA sealing band to create waterproof seals where the waterproofing mats abut each other.
And to comply with the terms of Schlüter-Systems Ltd’s waterproof guarantee, the Schlüter®-KERDI-KEBA was adhered and sealed with the sealant adhesive Schlüter®-KERDI-COLL.
Trying to achieve a waterproof seal between the drain in tiled floors and the waterproofing membrane in shower installations has traditionally caused problems. But there are no such problems in the four wetrooms at the country club, thanks to Schlüter®-KERDI-DRAIN, which overcomes the long-standing weak point in the construction of surface drain assemblies in tiled floors.
Schlüter®-KERDI-DRAIN’s upper assembly incorporates an integrated bonding flange on the top surface, which provides a secure bond between the drain and the waterproofing membranes. The drain housings come complete with odour traps and the system can connect to both horizontal and vertical pipework.
Tradsol’s Dave Bates says that conventional methods of trying to provide a waterproof connection, especially on a first floor timber substrate, have proved to be difficult and expensive in the past. “But using Schlüter®-KERDI-DRAIN in conjunction with the Schlüter®-DITRA waterproofing membrane solves the problem. The bonded flange on the drain is simply installed flush to the substrate surface using a sealing collar to produce an impervious connection with the waterproofing membrane.”
John Farragher, of Harmonix, says: “The complete systems solution we have installed at the Golf and Country Club provided the perfect answer to our waterproofing needs.”
