MPs Turn Out in Force for Renewable Heat

Around 50 MPs from all parties left their offices for College Green today to show their support for renewable heat at an event organised by Friends of the Earth and the Renewable Energy Association.

MPs had their photo taken in front of the Houses of Parliament and under a giant 21 ft solar-powered hot air balloon, which said “heating is half the UK CO2 problem”.  Campaigners were joined by shadow Secretary of State Meg Hillier who was congratulated on her new role.  A cross-party group of MPs, including Zac Goldsmith, Caroline Lucas and Alan Whitehead also posed for a photograph with campaigners.  All three MPs are sponsors of the current cross-party Early Day Motion 712 calling for renewable heat to be safeguarded under the Comprehensive Spending Review.

REA Chief Executive Gaynor Hartnell who welcomed MPs, said;

“the renewable heat industry is delighted to have had such a strong show of support from MPs of all parties today.  They have sent the message that decarbonising heat is essential.  Let’s hope the Coalition Government shows us it has heard that message loud and clear on October 20th”.
