The Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham is one of Europe’s busiest teaching hospitals, so the floorcovering in its main entrance area had to meet special challenges. Megalit, from Tarkett’s iQ range of vinyl floorcoverings, scored top marks for creative choice, ease of cleaning and performance.

Two colours of Megalit comprising 560 sq m of grey and 180 sq m of blue were used throughout the foyer area. Megalit features colours based on three themes; natural, urban and contemporary and incorporates high quality flakes of different shapes and sizes. The high proportion of transparent material in the mix gives the pattern richer depth and greater variation. “Tarkett vinyls have excellent cleaning qualities and never require polishing which was very important to us,” explains Philip Bolton, the Maintenance Supervisor. “However, we also wanted a floor that would look special and this range has a high quality appearance and unusual pattern that really appealed to us. We used complementary colours and protective edge borders to ring the changes across this large area.”

As a Tarkett iQ concept floor covering Megalit also offered a saving in maintenance costs of at least 30% compared to other floor types. The product has a unique ‘third generation’ PUR reinforced treatment. When combined with the highest quality raw material and manufacturing methods, this treatment ensures that the floorcovering will require No wax - No polish – ever! It was also the first homogeneous flooring in Class T, the highest wear group.

Tarkett iQ products also give specifiers the opportunity to select more sustainable floor coverings. The collection holds Building Research Establishment (BRE) Certification, which recognises its environmental credentials. This certification means that all the inputs and outputs from the manufacture of these products are independently verified and the effects over the whole life are measured for their environmental impact.

“We are very pleased with the results and have found Megalit to be a very good all-round product and very reasonable cost-wise. We have now standardised Tarkett floorcovering throughout the site,” added Phillip Bolton.

Tarkett-Marley Floors is a specialist manufacturer of a wide range of vinyl and linoleum floorcoverings for commercial and housing applications.
