Knauf AMF brings acoustic solutions to St Anne’s Academy

Staff and pupils at St Anne’s Academy, Rochdale moved into new purpose-built facilities in September, complete with acoustic ceiling solutions from Knauf AMF. The £16m Academy, constructed by Willmott Dixon, accommodates 750 students from 11-16 years and specialises in ICT and the built environment..

Knauf AMF ceilings were chosen for this project as we were looking for a ceiling specification that could provide high levels of sound attenuation, as well as the correct level of sound absorption. AMF’s wide range of tiles and finishes meant that all acoustic environments and situations could be met by a single supplier” explained David Wood, Project Architect at Aedas Architects Ltd..

David continued: “For key areas within the building, we required a suspended ceiling tile that would replicate a perforated plasterboard ceiling, but still allow easy maintenance access without messy hatches. Knauf AMF’s Symetra perforated tile, coupled with a recessed ceiling grid, provided the required aesthetic, acoustic performance and access needs.”.

Knauf AMF’s Thermatex Symetra was installed to the foyer/main reception area and faith room. This mineral panel features diagonal or vertical surface perforations that create harmonious and elegant geometric effects. A wide range of perforation sizes and hole centres can be produced, along with a choice of perforation patterns, sizes and edge details, to offer greater scope for contemporary ceiling design.

For the majority of ground floor classrooms, Knauf AMF’s Fine Stratos micro-perforated tiles were chosen. This lightly textured, sanded tile gives a clean, crisp appearance while the micro-perforations provide high sound absorption. .

The music room and construction classrooms were fitted with Thermatex Acoustic dB41 to provide higher levels of sound attenuation and absorption in these more demanding areas. The tiles are smooth and elegant with a concealed acoustic fleece, and were also chosen for all classrooms on the first floor..

PlasterPlus carried out all the ceiling installations at St Anne’s, including fitting Thermatex Alpha to the offices, stores and administrative areas. Thermatex Alpha is a lightweight tile featuring perforations to the core board that create Class A sound absorption. The new generation bio-soluble mineral wool, clay and starch contribute to the excellent acoustic performance, with a strong white surface finish. A plank format of Thermatex Alpha was also used for all corridors and circulation areas within the Academy..

Nick Jones, MD of PlasterPlus summed up the project: “We always enjoy working with Knauf AMF as their products are very easy to handle and install.  The results at St Anne’s Academy are something which we can all be proud of.”.
