Kalzip makes the great Xscape

The magnificent new £70 million Xscape leisure and retail centre in Braehead near Glasgow has become the latest landmark to showcase the exceptional flexibility of Kalzip.

Designed by architects FaulknerBrowns this striking new facility, which is the first of its kind in Scotland, features some 10,000 square metres of curved and tapered Kalzip 305 clad aluminium alloy on both the roof and walls of the main ski area. In addition, the specification for the lower level retail area was changed from a through-fix roof sheeting system to Kalzip 500 profiled sheets in order to better meet the specific performance requirements of design flexibility, durability and minimum maintenance.

Installed by approved Teamkal members Lakesmere for main contractor Laing O’Rourke, Kalzip’s thermal conductivity properties, extended life and modern appearance were vital to its selection. Owing to the unusual nature of the facility and specifically the 200 metre long real-snow ski slope housed within, the building had to be insulated against heat gain rather than heat loss. The Kalzip sheets provide a watertight seal, which when installed over the cold store construction helps maintain the optimum internal conditions for snow retention and preservation of the ski slope.

The external cladding also presented various installation challenges, which Lakesmere overcame through specific training in health and safety and plant machinery. With the use of cradle lifts and vacuum lifters, the 28 metre long Kalzip sheets were safely put into position and installed diagonally at a 60°angle. In order to minimise any potential delays or problems whilst working at height, Lakesmere used 3D CAD technology to design the individual sheets prior to installation.

As Scotland’s first real indoor ski-slope and only the third Xscape complex in the UK, the new landmark building at Braehead is part of the Renfrew Riverside Regeneration Partnership programme. The design of the Xscape building complements the other recently completed buildings in the surrounding area that also feature Kalzip aluminium, including the nearby Glasgow Fort shopping development.
