High Protection for Highcross

Tiling contractors knew that only the best would do when they worked with construction giant Sir Robert McAlpine on the Management Suite at Leicester’s biggest regeneration project, the new £350-million Highcross retail and leisure development.

In order to ensure that the high quality porcelain and stone effect tiles did not split, crack or debond from the substrate, a total of 500 linear metres of profile were specified from market leaders in essential tile protection and finishing, Schlüter-Systems Ltd.

As well as the Management Suite, Coventry-based W. B. Simpson & Sons (Midlands) Ltd were contracted to create a feature wall in the reception area, along with tiling a staircase and public toilets. In total, 1,300 square metres of Domus tiles were installed, including Minerali – a full body fine porcelain tile which replicates the natural mineral aspects of stratified stone – and the high quality classic stone effect Duotech.

Simpsons Director Richard Friebe has a long history of using Schlüter products. He says: “In this case we knew that the best way to protect the tiles from damage caused by movement was to create individual tile fields with the Schlüter®-DILEX-EKSN movement joint profile.”

The maintenance free profile was specified because of its long-standing effectiveness in protecting tiled surfaces which are subject to high mechanical stresses. It has stainless steel support sections and anchoring legs with a rubber movement insert. The side sections of the profile also provide effective protection for the edge of the tiles abutting it.

To protect the outer edge of tiled wall corners, the edge protection profiles Schlüter®-RONDEC brushed chrome anodised aluminium and the colour coated aluminium Schlüter®-JOLLY were used. Both profiles form an attractive finish while protecting the outer edge of the corner from damage caused by mechanical stresses. Schlüter®-RONDEC forms a symmetrically rounded finish, while Schlüter®-JOLLY has more of a square appearance.

All of the essential Schlüter protection required in the installation was recommended by W. B. Simpson.

The installation was completed using Mapei adhesive and grout – Keraquick, Keraflex Maxi and Ultracolour. Between four and ten tilers were on site for a total of four months.
