The unique single-layer flat roofing solutions provided by Gradient
Flat Roofing hit the airwaves when they were featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs series. A Gradient
solution was specified by London architect Ian Hogarth of Hogarth Architects for Hole House, his own dream home project which formed the centrepiece for an episode of the popular programme.
’s single-layer solutions offer an ideal way to achieve the desired insulation and drainage performance for a flat roof. They also offer numerous other benefits including off-site manufacturing under controlled factory conditions, easier installation, superior bonding, plus less need for skilled labour on-site. However it was the insulation performance that particularly impressed Ian.
“After attending a Gradient
CPD seminar, I was confident that the company could help me achieve Level Five of the Code for Sustainable Homes on the project,” he explains. “The speed of installation, flexibility and totally bespoke nature of a Gradient
solution were other major factors which influenced my specification decision.”
The five-floor 2500 sq ft Hole House project will also include insulation from Gradient
’s parent company, Recticel Insulation Products, with its high performance Eurothane GP
board being used on the pitched roof parts of the property. Eurothane GP
board has a rigid, closed-cell construction and is ideal for use in pitched roofing, flooring and framed wall applications.
"Once we realised how quickly and efficiently the Gradient
insulation could be specified and supplied we altered one of our office standard roofing specs to accommodate it,” adds Ian Hogarth. “This took out the vagaries of using site fillets to achieve falls, avoided potential problems and saved time. We also got to use an overall thicker insulation and improve U-values "
“By working with Ian and his team from the outset, we were able to help design a bespoke insulation scheme, for both the flat and pitched roof areas, that met his requirements completely,” adds Area Sales Manager Chris Gibbons.
