Geberit drainage solution chosen for London’s tallest residential riverside development – Ontario Tower

Ontario Tower, part of the New Providence Wharf development in London docklands will be one of Europe’s tallest residential developments when completed. Designed by world-renowned architects Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM), it comprises of over 700 apartments in two interlocking towers rising to 31 stories. Meeting the challenge of delivering a complete drainage solution for such a tall residential development, Geberit HDPE was specified throughout the building and underground car park by system designers and installers Briggs and Forrester.

Geberit drainage was also used in the adjacent 4 star Radisson Hotel and its underground car park. Rising 8 storeys the hotel is connected to Ontario Towers by a stunning triple height glass atrium.

Choosing to work with Geberit because of the company’s expertise in providing quality plumbing solutions for unique situations the Geberit HDPE (High density Polyethylene) drainage solution was chosen for the suspended drainage, as well as the rainwater and drainage stacks. A key reason for its specification was the ability to achieve sound deadening results equal to cast Iron – as demonstrated by site specific trials conducted at Geberit’s Swiss laboratories.

Increasingly specified in the UK, HDPE is a strong, highly durable but light material, which is cost effective and chemical resistant. An alternative to cast iron, it really is the modern drainage solution.

Designed with the professional contractor in mind and with many unique fittings the Geberit HDPE range is unrivalled. Its ‘fit and forget’ selection of jointing methods; butt welding, electrowelding and mechanical coupling, means it is easily and quickly installed on-site, as well as easily pre-fabricated offsite. Off-site pre-fabrication of large numbers of repeats or complex designs can achieve considerable installation and testing time savings.

Recognising the advantages of pre-fabrication Briggs and Forrester also contracted Geberit to pre-fabricate many of the stacks and system components. The Geberit Fabrication Service, which combines extensive technical expertise with wide-ranging production capabilities, fabricated over 3000m of Geberit HDPE risers at the Geberit manufacturing and pre-fabrication facilities in Aylesford, Kent.

Geberit also provided an on-site training programme for the contractors, helping to achieve final testing of the system within 2 weeks, as opposed to the 6 weeks forecast for a cast iron system.
