First Class Performance at Swansea University

Alumasc has supplied the high performance Derbigum waterproofing system for a new purpose-built facility at Swansea University. The six-storey Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) building, which has outstanding views of Swansea Bay, is home to over 200 specialists and thirty research groups.

The University Estates Project Office, who had previously specified Derbigum with outstanding results, recommended the system to architects The Powell Dobson Partnership, for use on this landmark development.

The environmental credentials of Derbigum were a major consideration in the specification of the product and contributed to this BREEAM rated building’s overall profile. The manufacture of Derbigum under the EN 14001 environmental standard ensured sustainability issues were maintained. In addition, the system is fire rated F.AA to BS476 Pt3 (EN1187 Pt4), the highest available rating, which allows unrestricted use under the Building Regulations.

The University’s waterside location demanded a durable solution capable of withstanding high moisture levels. The waterproofing system specified comprised Derbigum 4mm thick dual reinforced APP modified bituminous membrane, Derbibond S cold adhesive, Derbifoam rigid urethane insulation and a vapour control layer. Derbigum’s non-slip, light grey mineral surface was a key attraction and has helped to reduce the health and safety risks for maintenance foot traffic.

Alumasc’s Harmer Roof drainage outlets were also specified on the project. These fully engineered, lightweight aluminium outlets are easy to handle on site and during installation. Suitable for all types of roof decks, the Harmer aluminium outlets are stronger and less brittle than cast iron, whilst being highly resistant to corrosion – a vital factor in a coastal area such as Swansea.
