F. Ball isolator - a lesson in quick finishing at High School

F. Ball’s Isolator Membrane and Stopgap 900 floor smoothing compound provided the fastest route to safely fixing carpet tiles on to what was once a covered walkway without a damp proof membrane. The location was Stowupland High School in Suffolk, where Floor Dimensions Ltd’s problems with moisture were complicated by having to work out of school hours.

Over the years, additional buildings had enclosed the covered walkway so that it had become an interior passageway. The school wanted to install carpet tiles over the exisiting paving slabs, which had been treated with Bourne seal by the caretaker.

The first task was to shotblast the slabs to remove the seal before the application of Stopgap 900 DPM-Prep. This two-component acrylic floor smoothing compound is designed specifically for use under waterproof surface membranes including Stopgap Isolator. It can be laid from 3 mm to 20 mm thick on damp, uneven surfaces. Low odour and fast-setting with a walk-on hardness of just 90 minutes, it was ideal for this application.

Isolator was then loose laid over the area with seaming tape applied to the joints in the 2 metres wide membrane for additional moisture security. Burmatex Grimebuster heavy contract, fibre-bonded carpet tiles were then installed using Styccobond F41. A solvent free emulsion adhesive designed to provide a permanently tacky film, F41 prevents loose lay carpet tiles from moving, whilst allowing them to be lifted and replaced easily without remedial work.

With shotblasting carried out in the evening and the other works over successive weekends, the 210m² of carpet installation was achieved, in the words of Floor Dimensions’ Nigel Boughen, in the quickest possible time. “The F. Ball products all performed very well, as usual,” he states and adds”In fact, the whole job went extremely well.”
