F. Ball creates smooth and durable subfloor for hotel wedding suite

F. Ball and Co. Ltd’s latest fibre reinforced smoothing underlayment, Stopgap 700 Superflex, has been used to create a smooth subfloor for the installation of a chic new carpet in the wedding and function suite of the Ramada Clayton Lodge Hotel in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire. F. Ball’s Styccobond flooring adhesives were used to adhere the underlay and carpet to the subfloor, covering a total area of 120m2. With an events diary filled with celebrations, conferences and wedding dates booked months in advance, the hotel required a fast track installation as well as a high quality finish.

The Ramada Clayton Lodge Hotel’s pleasant rural location and ultra modern interior design has made it a popular venue for wedding receptions and special events. Wanting to upgrade the floor in the bar area serving the main ballroom suite, the hotel commissioned flooring contractor, Newcastle Flooring, to install a stylish new floorcovering to replace the existing floor.

Managing Director of Newcastle Flooring, Rob Atton, comments on the installation: “The hotel had a window of 48 hours between events for the refurbishment to take place. With a deadline to complete the installation by 5.00pm on the last day and a wedding party arriving at 6.00pm to use the area, we needed high performance products that we could rely on to get the job done in time.”

The hotel selected a jet-black carpet with a contemporary white design, and grey slate tiles for the service area in front of the bar and border around the room. The existing floor consisted of ceramic tiles and removing each tile would have taken additional time that the contractor and the hotel could not afford. Consequently, the contractor specified F. Ball’s newest smoothing underlayment, Stopgap 700 Superflex, which they applied directly onto the cleaned and primed ceramic tiled floor, to create a smooth surface prior to laying the carpet and slate tiles.

F. Ball’s latest smoothing underlayment formulation, Stopgap 700 Superflex has been enhanced to offer improved flexibility and superior crack resistance through the incorporation of advanced cement binder technology. On a practical level, the excellent self-smoothing characteristics of Superflex facilitated ease of use, while its fast setting properties helped the contractor to complete the installation within deadline.

Rob Atton explains: “It was the first time I’d used the new Stopgap 700 Superflex and I was absolutely amazed by its performance. It was easy to use and the flow of the product helped us to achieve a clean finish around the edges of the room. In my 25 years in the job, I’ve never known an underlayment dry as fast. By the time I’d laid the last section of the underlayment, I was able to walk on the first part I’d laid. This gave us more time to install the new carpet and tiles. We even finished with time to spare, which gave the hotel staff extra time to prepare the room for the wedding party.”

A release bond adhesive system was used to secure the underlay and carpet to the newly smooth subfloor. Firstly, Styccobond F40, a high tack adhesive, was applied to the subfloor, allowed to dry completely to provide a peelable bond, then the carpet underlay was fitted. Finally, Styccobond F3 was used to stick the carpet to the underlay. The flooring market’s leading adhesive, Styccobond F3 is a water-based rubber/resin adhesive. Offering excellent wet grab and an early build up of strength, Styccobond F3 is ideal for securing carpet in a broad range of flooring applications.
